Annotation: The variability of Fritillaria ionica has led Kamari (in Strid & Tan 1991; see also Kamari 1991) to distinguish 3 weakly defined subspecies under the name F. thessala — nomenclaturally incorrect as the name F. ionica possesses priority at the rank of species. These taxa are not always clearly differentiated (and were relegated into synomymy of »F. graeca subsp. thessala« in the »World Checklist of Monocotyledons«). While »F. thessala subsp. reiseri« seems to be confined to low altitudes of the island of Petalas (from where it was described) and adjacent Akarnania, both, »subsp. thessala« and »subsp. ionica« comprise populations of mountain areas of northwestern Greece. On the Ionian Islands the former morphotype is recorded from Lefkada according to Kamari, while the latter comprises the mountain populations of Corfu (including the type locality of F. ionica). In mainland Greece both occur partly sympatric in the Pindhos range, and even form mixed populations. Hybridization was observed, also with F. mutabilis. The chromosome number 2n = 24 was determined on plants from Petalas representing »F. thessala subsp. reiseri« (Kamari, op. cit.: 682). [2019-10-19]
