Annotation: The complex of Charybdis maritima comprises several species (see Speta 1980). So far only one morphotype with rather large reddish bulbs (the inner scales coloured as well) is known from the Ionian Islands. Those plants have proved to be tetraploid (Chromosome counts of 2n = 40 include plants from Corfu, Lefkada, Cephalonia and Zakynthos: Damboldt & Wulsche 1977: 538, Speta 1980: 211, Krenn 2001: 115). They were provisionally separated as »Urginea cf. numidica« by Speta (Speta 1980: 200, 209) and accepted as Drimia numidica in »Vascular Plants of Greece« (Dimopoulos & al. 2013: 102). The Ionian populations (together with those of West Greece and Albania as well as from Southern Italy and Sardinia) however differ from other tetraploids phytochemically (Krenn 2001). Their taxonomic identity and classification is still uncertain. [2016-01-17]
