Annotation: The geographically defined subspecies of the polymorphic Anacamptis papilionacea are not sharply distinguished from each other morphologically; subsp. messenica, subsumed under subsp. agaea in »Vascular Plants of Greece« (Dimopoulos & al. 2013: 115) and the »Atlas of the Hellenic Flora« (Strid 2024b: map 3988), reaches its northwestern range limit on the Ionian Islands. It remains to be verified whether, apart from this Greek race (represented, according to our observations, by plants with a typical lip shape from Corfu to Zakynthos), transitional forms to subsp. papilionacea are more widespread, as suggested by Kretzschmar & al. 2007 and documented for Zakynthos, and whether populations of the nominate subspecies also occur on Corfu (as mentioned by Hirth 2005: 185).
