Annotation: The Ionian populations recorded as V. kitaibeliana in the »Mountain Flora« (Th. Raus in Strid 1986) and in »Vascular Plants« of Greece (Dimopoulos & al. 2013; still so in Dimopoulos & al. 2017→) must obviously be referred to V. phitosiana according to the morphological features as delineated by Erben 1985: 401 for the taxa of the intricate V. kitaibeliana group. However, this identification still awaits karyological confirmation. — Borkowsky 1994: 127 has reported two other annual species of sect. Melanium from Corfu, viz. V. arvensis, and V. heldreichiana. The occurrence of the former species on the Ionian Islands was accepted in »Vascular Plants of Greece« but needs critical checking. The records of »V. heldreichiana« (sensu auct. eur.?, i. e. the Cretan V. rauliana) may possibly be due to confusion with V. phitosiana, but this indication of »V. heldreichiana« is puzzling by the statement that it is presumably the most common Viola (»vermutlich die häufigste Viola-Sippe«) on Corfu, while V. alba subsp. dehnhardtii is not reported at all by the author.
