Annotation: Portulaca oleracea, as traditionally defined, represents an aggregate species consisting of predominantly autogamous strains at different ploidy levels (tetraploids and hexaploids apart from the diploid P. nicaraguënsis). Morphological differentiation is mainly restricted to seed-coat structures (testa cell ornamentation, visible at high magnification) combined with seed-size. In recent years a series of taxa have been defined by these means, variously assessed as subspecies or species, of which we were able to identify several morphotypes from the Ionian Islands (P. africana, P. oleracea, P. nitida, P. rausii, P. trituberculata following the taxonomic concept of Danin & al. 2008, Danin & Raus 2012; determination partly only approximate). Taxonomic evaluation of this diversity is still controversial however, and recent investigations have shown that transitional forms exist, and seed-size is not positively associated with ploidy level (Walter & al. 2015). The present microspecies concept needs further evaluation. [2016-03-31]
