Annotation: This late flowering daffodill species was formerly documented on the Ionian Islands under the names »Narcissus obsoletus« or »N. serotinus«. Narcissus deficiens was described based on plants collected »Ex Leucade prope castellum Alexandri«, now known as Agia Mavra Castle (κάστρο της Αγίας Μαύρας), opposite the island of Lefkada (Herbert 1847: tab. 22). The species is thought to have originated from a long-established allotetraploid hybrid between diploid N. serotinus and hexaploid N. obsoletus (Mifsud & Lanfranco 2024 and literature cited therein). The tetraploid chromosome number 2n = 20 was confirmed in plants from Zakynthos (Samaropoulou & al. 2013b: 287, reported under »N. serotinus s. lat.«). The circummediterranean distribution of Narcissus deficiens greatly exceeds that of its parents. [2024-11-12]
