Annotation: The »Flora Hellenica« has united under Ranunculus sardous all Greek plants usually separated as R. marginatus (Strid in Strid & Tan 2002: 47 ff.). Discrimination between both is admittedly difficult but all Ionian populations investigated so far present the nutlet shape as characterizing the latter taxon (as already established by Vierhapper 1914: 242–243 for Corfu), and are different from those of Central European R. sardous. Variation in plant height and flower size is considerable: Rather tall, branching plants with large flowers (as described as R. sardous subsp. balcanicus) can be found as well as 1-flowered depauperate plants (»R. parvulus«) but are obviously modifications depending on nutrition and density of vegetation.
