Annotation: Plants of the Eastern Mediterranean with densely pubescent branches and lower leaf surfaces were separated from the nominate taxon as Ulmus minor subsp. canescens (e. g. in the »Vascular Plants of Greece« Dimopoulos & al. 2013: 143); however, they are linked to the ± glabrous forms of the region by frequent transition forms; other correlated traits are absent. Occurrence of »U. campestris« on Zakynthos was thought only doubtfully indigenous (Margot & Reuter 1840: 19), the plants were later assigned to U. procera (Ronniger 1941: 77); they are also to be included here (see the note in Greuter 1977: 38).
