Annotation: The differences between Valerianella eriocarpa and V. muricata are limited to the calyx shape in mature fruits (coroniform and distinctly 5–6-toothed in the first, but ± reduced to an oblique narrow rim without or with small teeth in the latter). The distinguishing features lack correlation with other characters, and discrimination often fails in view of intermediates; therefore the traditional taxa at best can be ranked as varieties (Thiébaud 1987). Most of our records can be identified with the muricata morphotype. [2017-01-23]
