Annotation: Bellevalia hyacinthoides was early recognized and described as Hyacinthus spicatus based on material including plants from Zakynthos (Smith in Sibthorp & Smith 1809: 237; renamed B. spicata: Boissier 1846: 110), but the species has a complicated nomenclatural history (see Persson & Wendelbo 1979). On Lefkada as well as on Zakynthos diploid plants (2n = 8) have been identified, on Cephalonia in addition to diploids also a triploid (2n = 12) population (Phitos 1988: 48; Bareka & Kamari 1999: 324, Baldini 1999: 423; Bareka & al. 2008: 739).
