Annotation: Identification of the Ionian (and Greek) populations of Coris monspeliensis with subsp. syrtica (otherwise restricted to N. Africa) as assumed in the »Med-Checklist« (Greuter & al. 1989: 375) is questionable; according to »Vascular Plants of Greece« subsp. monspeliensis is accepted as the only representative in Greece (Dimopoulos & al. 2013: 131). Due to the glandular indumentum Browicz & Zieliński (Browicz & Zielińsky 1989: 83) had considered the Zakynthos populations belonging to »var. syrtica« (based on material from Tunisia). The leaves of our plants however are glabrescent to nearly glabrous, and the uppermost ones are not entire (as described by Murbeck 1898: 2; cf. Masclans 1968: 757) but distinctly spinose-dentate like in subsp. fontqueri (Masclans 1968, Gómez in Castroviejo & al. 1997) that has shorter calyx teeth; apart from different branching pattern. The indumentum character (adult leaves become almost completely glabrous) and stem-leaf dentation are not sufficiently correlated to justify seven varieties (subsumed as three subspecies) as proposed by Masclans 1968 for the West Mediterranean region. Consequently we refrain for the present from subdividing the species. [2016-11-12]
