Annotation: On the Ionian Islands, this complex of chromosome races is represented by diploid and tetraploid plants. Morphologically they are poorly differentiated, and possible characters are difficult to evaluate in the field. Tetraploids with whitish bulb scales are said to correspond to Prospero autumnale s. str., such with reddish bulb scales were described as P. elisae. Diploid populations generally have smaller bulbs when adult (0,7–1,8 against [1,0]1,2–2,5[3,0] cm in diameter), with more slender scapes when flowering. Populations with white bulbs of both ploidy levels are rather widespread on the islands (the diploids provisionally designated as »P. ionicum« by Speta); tetraploids with reddish bulbs are known to us from Corfu, Lefkada, and Zakynthos, while corresponding diploids (designated as »P. damboldtianum« by Speta) are presently only known from the latter island. Association with one of these types is precarious without knowledge of the ploidy level. [2016-01-17]
