Annotation: The identity of the East Mediterranean populations (including the Ionian ones) of the suffruticose Salicornia species group (formerly Sarcocornia: cf. Steffen & al. 2015; but see Piirainen & al. 2017) remains uncertain: Recent studies (Fuente & al. 2013, Fuente & al. 2015) reveal S. perennis s. str. to be confined to the Atlantic coasts of Europe. Appropriate investigations of S. fruticosa and its allies E of the Apennine peninsula are outstanding. According to Fuente & al. 2015 decisive characters for delimitation are to be found in seed micromorphology. However, due to late seed formation (November/December) the herbarium material currently available to us lacks mature seeds necessary for a thorough comparison.
