Annotation: The description of Saponaria aenesia was based on material from Cephalonia (Heldreich 1876: 238), the type specimen was collected in the summit area of Mt. Enos (»in regione abietina«). Its chromosome number 2n = 28 was determined on plants from this region (Samaropoulou & al. 2013a: 216). In »Flora Hellenica« the species is considered to be endemic to that region (Phitos in Strid & Tan 1997), however, more or less identical populations are also found on Ithaca and Lefkada. On the latter island, moreover, populations were observed which are morphologically intermediate to S. calabrica. The Kalamos populations of S. aenesia approach such intermediates (Gutermann & al. 2014). [2016-07-15]
